Frequently Asked Questions
- When does registration start and is there an early-bird rate:
Registration starts at the end of January and continues until mid April on a "register until the age division is full basis." We don't offer special rates to those registering early because we are usually full and we budget based on one set fee.
- I don't have access to a computer can I do it the same way as last year:
No. Forms for registering will not be sent out. If you do not have a computer and cannot make use of an internet connection at a library/community centre/school you will have to contact us through our phone number(416-510-5723) and we will help you with registration
- I dont have a credit card. Is that a problem?:
Not at all. Register on-line by following the link from the North York baseball website and when completing the registration, indicate that you will pay by cheque. Then mail the cheque to us and when it is received your registration will be accepted and you will receive an e-mail telling you so
- I don't like giving my credit card details out online. How secure is it:
The company we are working with, QuickEnrollment, are well-established, are used by many
similar organizations and take security very seriously. Visa and MasterCard International have made it mandatory for all processors of credit card data to pass stringent tests in order to become compliant to their standards. More details can be viewed here
- Are there discounts for siblings:
Yes. Discounts apply to House League fees only. First child's fee is
$110. 2nd child's fee is $100. For additional siblings there is no charge. Families with three children, or more, should register their children on-line but
elect to pay the fees($210 total) by cheque to the NYBA directly. The
on-line system is unable to compute this additional discount.
- I'm new to baseball: What's the difference between House, Rep and Select:
The House league program is run each day during the week with one evening designated for each age division. It is open to anyone who wishes to register and involves one game per week from early May to the end of August plus some practices as determined by our volunteer coaches. All teams then play on our Championship Day the first Saturday after Labour Day. In "rep ball" players try out for teams which play at a more competitive level against other teams in the region and in week-end tournaments - leading to possible qualification for Ontario championships on the Labour Day weekend. Rep ball costs significantly more than house league and requires a much greater time commitment to games and practices right through the summer. Select is somewhere in-between in terms of games played and costs involved
- What does 'AAA' mean:
Triple A teams are drawn from areas of larger populations and usually compete at the highest levels. North York AAA teams are determined each fall for the following baseball season
- I'd like to play on a Rep/Select team. Can I play this summer and do I have to play House League as well:
Triple A teams are chosen in the fall as the squads train over the winter. In the spring, you may try out for a double A or Select team if one exists for your age division. Check our website for more information. Players on Rep teams do not usually play House League but Select players must.
- My son is better than A-Rod. Can he play a year up in rep?
In rep ball children can only be "signed" to a team in their own age group. For the outstanding players, there may be opportunities to be called up to play for a team a year older if they are short of players for a specific game or tournament
- I'm 13 and have just arrived in the country. Will everybody be much better than me:
No. Our house leagues include players who have never played, especially at the younger levels but even at the older. Everyone is there to have fun and learn as best they can
- I see there are new rules on pitch counts. Does this apply to House League or just rep:
Just rep. The lack of volunteers in House League would make enforcement next to impossible. However, restrictions on pitchers in house league in terms of innings pitched are probably just as effective
- I see some of the games don't start until 8:30. When do they finish:
8:30 games in Peewee and Bantam have a 2 hour time limit. In fact, in Peewee the time limit is 15 minutes less until the school year is over.
- Do I get to keep my kit at the end of the year:
All players receive a uniform consisting of a shirt, pants, and cap at the beginning of the season. It is theirs to keep.
- I go to a camp in the summer for a month. Can I still play House League:
Yes, but you should let us know when registering so we don't put you on a team with others who will also be away. If you will be away longer, we recommend that you do not play as it is very disruptive to a team
- Can I cancel my registration for House League. Do I get a full refund:
If it becomes necessary for you to cancel your house league registration after you have paid it you will be eligible for a refund if you do so before the season starts or if we can fill your child's spot with another paid registration. In this case your refund will be the full amount you paid minus the costs of processing($10)
- Why don't you play twice a week in May and June like some other Associations:
Diamond space only permits 1 game per week with
weekend practice time available. The associations that offer two games per
week in most cases do not offer a program that continues through July and
August.
- What happens if games are rained out:
If we can, players are notified before they leave for the park. Make up games are arranged by the Convener of the division, if possible
- How much does it cost to play on a rep team:
For Peewee and below the registration fee is $275. Bantam and up is $325. For all levels there are additional costs paid to the team to cover indoor practices in late winter, extra equipment, and tournament fees not covered by the NYBA. There may also be hotel costs to bear in mind
- My son played rep with another association last year. Can he tryout for North York:
Players wishing to tryout for a North York Rep (not Select) team who, the year prior, played for a Rep team other than North York, must first contact Rep committee member Anthony Rhynold to make sure that the proper paper work has been completed. Players may not attend a NY workout of any type until these steps have been undertaken.
- How old do I have to be to be able to Umpire. What training do you Provide:
We usually start umpires at age 10 or 11, and they will be at least two years older than the players they are officiating. A clinic in April or May is necessary for anyone to officiate a house league game and there are opportunities to take OBA courses
- Would I be the only person umpiring a game:
Only if your partner does not show up. Two umpires are assigned to every game
- I'm a High schooler. Can I get community service hours for umpiring:
No. Umpires are paid for the games they officiate
- Is there an AGM:
Yes. It is held as part of a regular meeting of the Board of North York baseball within
the first 3 months of each
calendar year. It is open to Board members for the purpose of determining various positions in the Association. .
- My son left his cap behind last week. Where can I pick it up :
During the season lost items turned in are held at the snackbar. It is possible, too, that your child's coach may have spotted it when putting equipment away after the game.
- What exactly does a convener do :
Division conveners work with the registrar to draft the teams. The
priorities are to create teams which are competitive while recognizing
children want to play on teams with their friends. They support the coaches
in making sure they have the equipment they need, sort out various problems
that may come up during the season, and where possible they schedule the
playing of rained out games and facilitate practice time for coaches as
needed. In some cases they also make the decision about rainouts and
communicate this information to teams through the baseball phone
line(416-410-5723) or the web site. They also assign umpires for the games
and organize the playoffs.
- Are the coaches vetted via a Police check :
Normally we do not require a police check for coaches who register their children. If other adults volunteer, we do require a police check which the NYBA pays for
- Who is responsible if my child gets injured at a game/practice. Do you have any liability insurance
:
Through the Ontario Baseball Association all of our volunteers and players are insured with a Hamilton company, Pearson-Dunn. Coaches and others automatically have liability insurance as do the players and accident insurance is also provided. The policy covers such things as dental coverage, coverage for medicines, crutches and even tutoring costs should a child be injured and lose time at school. There are benefit limits and the plan is a secondary one which means its coverage kicks in after existing plans a family may have. Further, the plan does not cover things that are available in any government health plan.
- How do I get a receipt towards the Child Fitness tax credit
What about 2007 payments :
When you submit your 2007 tax return you do not need to include a receipt in order to claim the fitness tax credit and you can claim the full registration amount paid. If you are audited and Revenue Canada asks for this receipt contact us by e-mail at mail@northyorkbaseball.com and one will be sent to you. Starting in 2008, one of the benefits of the on-line registration will be that you will be able to access a receipt after your registration is accepted
